Whaletown Triathlon - Anita, Iowa

After 25 great years of creating and directing the Whaletown Triathlon, I decided last year would be my last as race director. I made a huge effort to find some group, or individual locally who could take over the race, and keep up the high standards we set here in Anita. Since no one wanted to take charge, I'm going to retire the race completely. Everyone was anxious to help, but no one wanted to be the person in charge. After showing several people the time-line of duties to perform, some of them almost a year before the race, all the interested parties declined. Putting on a race like Whaletown takes an unbelievable amount of time, energy, and most of all passion. I understand how daunting the task looks when you see it on paper. Everyone loves the race, but I'm the one who had the passion.

So to everyone who did the race, helped with the race, or just watched the race, I say Thank You! It was a great run, and I've got no regrets. Good luck to all of you in your training. Maybe I'll see you at Dam to Dam, or some other race. Be sure to tell me hello, and let me know what you liked about Whaletown. A special thanks to Ken & Carol Deman of Omaha. As far as I can tell one or the other or both have done the race for almost the entire 25 years. Amazing people, and amazing athletes.

Don't worry, I'm okay with this decision. Everything has its time and place. I won't miss the pressure, the stress, or the sleepless nights, but I will miss you guys, and that incredible rush on race day when the cannon sounds!

Have a great racing season, support the "Heart Of America" race series, and most of all be safe and be happy!
